6th Grade

Throughout the first quarter, the students and I will focus on the important reading strategies using the curriculum of Good Habits, Great Readers.

Patriot's Pen Essay Contest

Every year, the students have the opportunity to participate in the national Patriot's Pen writing contest. This year's topic is: The America I Believe In.

Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie

As a great review of reading strategies, the students get to read this novel as a whole class. Students practice locating the reading strategies throughout the book using sticky notes.

Literature Circles

One of the favorite units of the year; students are split into groups based on book preferences and have the opportunity to lead their own book unit, completing fun and engaging jobs along the way.

Research Project/Genius Hour

Students will have the opportunity to research a topic and create a project based on that research.

The Cay

What an amazing story about survival! Students will explore reading strategies through The Cay and the characters within it.

The River

A great story about survival and perseverance. Sequel to Gary Paulsen's Hatchet.

Reader's Theater

Students will participate in both a genre study as well as Reader's Theater to enhance study of different genres.

Monday Meditations

Every Monday, students are given a prompt and some class time to begin responding to it. Each prompt response will be due the following Monday. Prompts can be found in student Google Drive accounts.
