Week 19

Greetings on this brisk Sunday morning!

I hope that all of you had a blessed Christmas and a happy new year! Who would have thought that it would already be 2017 and almost the end of quarter 2, making us officially half way through the school year! Time is sure flying!

Important Dates:

  • Student Council meeting - January 10th @ 7:05 a.m.

  • End of quarter 2 - January 13th

  • Early dismissal - January 13th @ 11:10 a.m.

  • Student Council meeting - January 17th @ 7:05 a.m.

  • National Lutheran School Week - January 22 - 28th

Last Week:

6th Grade ~ Last week, the 6th graders began presenting their book trailers, and I have been blow away by how good they are! The first book trailer showing is always a little rough, but these 6th graders have grasped the concept well, and I am so impressed with the effort they have been putting forth! Keep up the good work! In DGDP, we started the final section (section 4), and their final DGDP Reading Strategies packet was assigned. This packet will be due next Monday, January 16th. This coming week, we will be finishing up the book! In grammar, the students took list #4 of their preposition quizzes, which as always, they did amazingly well at! They also filled out a preposition study guide with partners, which will be beneficial for them to use to study for their prepositions grammar test this coming Wednesday.

7th Grade ~ Last week, the 7th graders began presenting their book trailers. We also continued to work with figurative language, learning our last elements: hyperbole and idioms. On Friday, the students began applying what they've learned thus far in the unit, to analyze poems. They will be finishing up that activity this coming Monday, and preparing for their upcoming poetry test, which will be sometime the following week. In grammar, the students took list #4 of their preposition quizzes, which as always, they did amazingly well at! They also filled out a preposition study guide with partners, which will be beneficial for them to use to study for their prepositions grammar test this coming Wednesday.

8th Grade ~ Last week, the 8th graders began presenting their book trailers. I always tell the students that I enjoy seeing 6th graders vs. 8th graders when it comes to book trailers because the 8th graders' are just so much more detailed after having 2 years of practice and experience with the programs! Keep up the hard work! The rest of last week week, we dug into Part 3 of The Book Thief and finished that on Friday. In the near future, the students will be doing more independent reading of the novel, as it is important to implement "GRR" or the gradual release of responsibility. However, I just have to say that I have NEVER had a class grasp hold of this novel so well and be so involved in the comprehension process. It is making this entire unit SUCH a blast to teach! :) In grammar, the students took list #4 of their preposition quizzes, which as always, they did amazingly well at! They also filled out a preposition study guide with partners, which will be beneficial for them to use to study for their prepositions grammar test this coming Wednesday.

All ~

  • The students will be finishing up their book trailers this Wednesday. I already informed the students, but we will NOT be having book talks for 3rd quarter because of science fair. However, the students are still going to be required to read a book and provide me with a short verbal summary about it for their 3rd quarter grade. Very low-key and minimal work-load, but I still want the students reading!

  • There will be a grammar test on prepositions this Wednesday, January 11th. The students will get their study guides back on Monday.

  • Congratulations to all of the students who played/performed/attended the Holiday Tournament this weekend! It is always fun seeing the students sitting together in the student section, cheering on their classmates. Just makes my heart melt :)

God's blessings on the rest of your weekend!

Grace
