Last Week
6th Grade ~ Last week, the 6th graders finished up with Drums, Girls, & Dangerous Pie. To close up the book, the students did an activity where they analyzed the end of the book and discussed the last 2 chapters through comprehension questions. They were then assigned their final project (a glogster) which involved finding different elements to represent a specific character from the book. They had 3 days to work on the project in class this last week, and the glogster is due this coming Monday (tomorrow). I will show the students how to send the glogster to me on Monday. In grammar, we started chapter 4, which is on pronouns, and will continue to work with pronouns for the next few weeks.
7th Grade ~ Last week on Monday, the 7th graders reviewed for their poetry test which was on Tuesday. I was SUPER impressed with how well the students did on their tests and the motivation for those who went above and beyond to create quizlets for extra credit. In grammar, we started chapter 4, which is on pronouns, and will continue to work with pronouns for the next few weeks. Thursday and Friday, we began discussing the 1960s in preparation for our The Outsiders unit, which we will begin reading this coming week. I am very excited to start reading this book with the students, and discuss the lifestyle and mindset of the 1960s! It's going to be a great unit!
8th Grade ~ Last week, the 8th graders received list #8 of Latin/Greek roots. This year, I have been very impressed with the study-ethic of the students and their persistence to do well on the quizzes each week. Keep up the great work! On Tuesday, we finished reading Part 4 of The Book Thief, and then did a journal prompt about similes and a Socratic discussion about the section together as a class. In grammar, we started chapter 4, which is on pronouns, and will continue to work with pronouns for the next few weeks. Thursday and Friday, the students were assigned their project for Part 4 of The Book Thief. For this project, the students are to think of something that has always been a fear of theirs or something they have struggled with throughout their life. They then have to create some type of media presentation, telling the story of how it has effected their life and their goals to overcome it - this project coincides with one of the chapters in the book where a character tells the story of what he has been most afraid of in his life. This is probably my favorite project of the entire year because of the honesty and thought that the students put towards the project. I also feel like there is a buildup of trust between the students and me, because they know that nobody will see these projects but me. These projects will be due this coming Wednesday.
All ~ Reminder that there is NO book talk for 3rd quarter. The students know that they must still read a book and turn it in to me with a verbal summary by the end of the quarter thought. Any questions about the requirements can be found/answered in the students' LA folder on a document titled: "3rd Quarter Science Fair Substitute."
Enjoy the rest of your day and have an awesome National Lutheran School Week. It's going to be a blast!
God's blessings!
