Week 31

Good almost April!

Happy weekend! I am very excited to go home, eat myself some pizza, and put on my pajamas! I hope that all of you have fun or relaxing plans for this weekend as well. Additionally, I wanted to thank all those parents and families who helped support our FILS boys at Nationals last weekend. It was great to see fans in the stands. I know the boys really appreciated it :)

Important Dates:

  • April 4th - Student Council meeting @ 7:05 a.m.

  • April 8 - April 17th - Easter/Spring Break!

  • April 18th - Student Council meeting @ 7:05 a.m.

  • April 21 - 25th - 7th/8th Grade Washington D.C. Trip

Last Week:

6th Grade ~ This week, the 6th graders finished reading their literature circle books in their groups. Then, on Thursday, I assigned their final project that they will be working on in their groups all of next week. For this project, the groups were given 4 options of projects for their groups to pick from: an extended/alternate/additional chapter to their book, a diary with 4 entries in it, a historical timeline matching up with historical events going on at the time their book took place, or a newspaper - each student will be required to write 4 paragraphs (5-7 sentences long) for their particular project. Note: this project has 2 parts: a written component which is one of the 4 options listed above, and then a presentation portion (a mini book talk). This final project will be due next Friday, April 7th. The rubric for the project can be found in the students' Language Arts folders in Google Drive. In grammar, the students continued working with interjections. The Chapter 6 Test on interjections will be next Wednesday.

7th Grade ~ This week, the 7th graders had 2 more days to work on their final projects for the Outsiders, and then turned them in on Friday. On Wednesday, the students continued working with interjections in grammar. The Chapter 6 Test on interjections will be next Wednesday. We also started watching The Outsiders movie this week, and finished it today. The students handled themselves very well during the more mature parts, and I think they enjoyed seeing just how much the movie was like the book. I was very impressed. Next week, we will be starting our final unit of the year... Public Speaking!

8th Grade ~ This week, the 8th graders were introduced to research papers and how to actually research properly. I taught the students how to do both note cards and source cards, and then the rest of the week was devoted to researching. I have been enjoying watching the students get excited about their topics and the information that they have been learning, despite the fact that they are actually doing "work" at the same time. :) On Friday, the students turned in their 4 sources for their research project - thank you for taking time to bring your child/ren to the library. I truly appreciate it! The next due date will be next Friday, April 7th, in which 25-30 note cards are due. In grammar, the students continued working with interjections. The Chapter 6 Test on interjections will be next Wednesday.

All ~ This week, the students signed up for 4th quarter book talks. For this quarter, the students can pick either a book talk or a book trailer (both rubrics can be found in their LA folders on Google Drive). Book presentations will begin Monday, May 15th.

  • NOTE: Because of research papers, the 8th graders will not be doing book talks/book trailers. Instead, they are required to do the same thing they did for 3rd quarter: read a book and "talk" with me about it.

I hope you all have a blessed weekend!

Grace
