Last Week

6th Grade ~ Last week, the 6th graders started discussing the writing process for Patriot's Pen, a national writing competition. I introduced the topic by reviewing the 6 Traits of Writing, as well as the format of a basic 5 paragraph essay. We then brainstormed as a class different things the students could write about for this year's topic: "America's Gift to My Generation." The students filled out a graphic organizer organizing their thoughts for their essay (due Tuesday), and we will begin filling out the outline and writing the rest of this week. In grammar, the students started Chapter 3, which is on prepositions.

7th Grade ~ Last week, the 7th graders read and discussed chapters 14-19 of The Giver. The students then did some comprehension questions to go along with the readings, as well as a whole class and serious discussion about chapter 19 (the meaning of release in the book... also known as euthanasia/abortion). This coming week, we will be starting Patriot's Pen, our annual national writing competition. This year's topic is: "America's Gift to My Generation." It is my hope to brainstorm and organize the essay this week, and then as the students are writing next week, to finish up The Giver on the side. In grammar, the students started Chapter 3, which is on prepositions.

8th Grade ~ Last week, the 8th graders received list 7 of Latin/Greek roots, and took a quiz on Friday. Note that this week we will NOT be having a roots list because we are staring to work on Patriot's Pen, our annual national writing competition. On Monday, we did a pre-reading activity for our final "short" story unit, and then began reading "The Monkey's Paw." Throughout the week, we read/listened to the different parts of the story, and then the students did different reading strategy-type questions based on what they read. On Friday, the students were able to watch the film version of "The Monkey's Paw," which they seemed to enjoy :) In grammar, the students continued to work with prepositions. This Wednesday, the students will be taking their Chapter 4 grammar test on prepositions.

All ~

  • Book talks start this week! Please be reminding your children to finish those up/share them with me before their due date, so that they do not get points taken off for "responsibility and preparedness."

  • Also, if you are interested in ordering book orders, please use my teacher code: PBKZC. Book orders will be due to me no later than October 30th.

I hope you have a wonderful week! Enjoy the fall weather!

God's blessings!

Grace
