Happy, happy Monday!
I just wanted to thank all of those that attended conferences last week. While it is chaotic and tiring, the teachers and I appreciate you taking out time to come talk with us. For me, conferences are a time where I get to praise my students, and get to know my families better. I look forward to this time every year (even though I am always super exhausted afterwards). So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for valuing your children's education :)
That being said...

Last Week
6th Grade ~ Last week, the 6th graders put the final touches on their Patriot's Pen essays, and we turned them in! I cannot wait to see how the competition plays out this year! For the rest of the week, the students did a mini research project on different types of drums to prepare us for our first novel study of the year, Drums, Girls, & Dangerous Pie (DGDP). On Thursday, the students presented their projects to their classmates, and then previewed the book. I discussed with the students the importance of taking care of school books and NOT mistreating them or losing them. From now on, the students will be expected to bring their DGDP book to class every day. If not, they will be receiving a demerit for not being prepared and disrupting the lesson to go to their locker (I do, however, give a week of lee-way for those less organized students to get used to the system :). In grammar, the students continued to practice with prepositional phrases. NOTE: the students will be taking their Chapter 3 Grammar test THIS Wednesday.
7th Grade ~ Last week, the 7th graders put the final touches on their Patriot's Pen essays, and we turned them in! I cannot wait to see how the competition plays out this year! We then spent the rest of the week finally finishing The Giver. The students completed their final Jonas Journal prompt, as well as the last comprehension questions for the novel. When the students get back from Outdoor Ed, I will be explaining the final project for The Giver. In grammar, the students started Chapter 4, which is on pronouns.
8th Grade ~ Last week, the 8th graders put the final touches on their Patriot's Pen essays, and we turned them in! I cannot wait to see how the competition plays out this year! The rest of the week, the students did a mini research project on the 1920's in preparation for our final "short story", "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button." On Wednesday, the students presented their projects. This week, the students will be watching a documentary on F. Scott Fitzgerald (author of "The Curious Case...") and then getting into their literature circles to read the short story itself. In grammar, the 8th graders started Chapter 4, which is on pronouns.
ALL ~ This week, I will be sending home conferences reports for those families unable to attend conferences. In these reports will be your child's progress report from 1st quarter. If you see any sections highlighted in green, know that these are areas/assignments that your child struggled with. Additionally, there will be a student/teacher evaluation attached to the report. These reports WILL be going home with your child, so please ask to see it!
Have a wonderful week!
