Week 20

Happy National Lutheran Schools Week!

It is my prayer that you all had a restful weekend. I know that this time of the year gets pretty crazy with sports and activities, so even if it's an hour to relax, I hope you were able to find that moment :)

Before I get into the normal swing of things, I wanted to explain what the students are going to be doing for their 3rd Quarter book project. Every year for Grandparent's Day, a specific group of students presents work (Fine Arts Night, Science Fair, etc.). This year, the Fellowship Hall will be dedicated to English/Language Arts... which means it's my year! Last Friday, I explained to the students what the project was going to be, and I had many who were already thinking about what they were going to do. Therefore, let me explain. This quarter, the students will be reading a book (as per usual), but instead of doing a book talk/trailer, they are going to be doing more of a creative, hands-on project. I provided the students with about 15 different project options, and they are to pick one that they think exemplifies the novel that they read. I also informed the students that there will be some deadlines that they must meet. They are: have a book selected and shown to me by Friday, January 26th; finish their book by Tuesday, February 20th; and present the projects to the class between the dates of March 5-14th. Grandparent's Day will be on Friday, March 16th... which is why we are trying to get everything ready to go before then. I will attach the rubric and student presentation dates to this blog post so you can read up more on the project itself. Like I told the students, right now, their ONLY job is to read their book. We'll worry about projects when we reach that point. Please feel free to ask any questions that you may have!

Last Week

6th Grade ~ Last week, the 6th graders presented their DGDP glogsters that they had been working on the week prior. I then spent the rest of the week introducing "Genius Hour" which will be a project that the students work on once or twice a week throughout the rest of the school year. This should be a project that is completed solely in class and not homework. If you are interested more in what "Genius Hour" is, here is a link about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEQzKH7v0-Q. For this project, the students will be researching one of their favorite authors and creating a project of their choice on the author. As we move throughout the project, I will inform you more on what is going on :) In grammar, we continued working with conjunctions.

7th Grade ~ Last week, the 7th graders were introduced to the next novel that they are going to be reading in ELA, Crispin. This book takes place in the Dark Ages, which coincidentally the students are learning about in Social Studies. Throughout this unit, both Ms. Shields and I will be team teaching about the Dark Ages and discussing the events of the story. As an introduction to the unit, Ms. Shields and I hosted a "Catholic Saint Speed Dating" where the students had to research a catholic saint and then tell their classmates about it in the Fellowship Hall via speed dating format (you can see a video example on Seesaw). The rest of the week, we started reading Crispin, and completed our first set of comprehension questions. In grammar, I introduced conjunctions and the students did a quick worksheet.

8th Grade ~ Last week, the 8th graders received list 15 for Latin/Greek roots. Please note that the 8th graders will be having a test on Quarter 2's lists next Friday. The rest of the week, the students worked on a project for The Book Thief, which involved them talking about something that they fear, worry about, etc. This is probably one of my favorite projects all year because the students get in touch with their emotions (something I don't always see :) We also did watch "The Incredibles" because the 8th graders earned their movie day for my class. In grammar, we continued working with conjunctions.

Have a blessed Lutheran Schools Week!

Grace
