Last Week:
6th Grade ~ Last week, the 6th graders and I continued talking about selecting books and how to find a book that is a good fit for them. We spent most of the week focusing on Author's Purpose and will finish up with that this week. The students also had the opportunity to research one of their favorite authors and find out a little more about who they are and why they chose to become an author. In grammar, the 6th graders reviewed adjectives and adverbs and then did a quick grammar worksheet on that. I am excited to do Shurley grammar with this class this year because we will be able to do a lot of review and then pick up right where they left off last year! Yay!
7th Grade ~ Last week, the 7th graders spent the first part of the week preparing for their Elements of a Story quiz (which was on Thursday); we played bingo and worked on creating a study set on Quizlet. Then, on Thursday, the students took their quiz and did SO well! Very proud of them and how well they've started off the school year! On Friday, I started to introduce the first novel that we will be reading this school year: The Giver. I will be sending home a permission slip today and do ask that you sign it and have your child return it to me by Wednesday as we will begin reading the novel that day! I am so excited about starting this novel with the students and hope they enjoy it as much as I do :) In grammar, the advanced class discussed simple & complete subjects and predicates and then the students did a worksheet. In Shurley, we reviewed the 4 types of sentences, adjectives, and adverbs, and then did a worksheet.
8th Grade ~ Last week, the 8th graders got their second Latin/Greek roots list (always found in their LA folder in Google Drive). As a class, we practiced with that list throughout the week, and then the students took their quiz on Friday. Quizzes will always be the same format (first 5 questions fill in the blank, and then the 2nd 5 questions multiple choice. The last 3 questions will require the students to write the definition of the root we discussed that week. For example: if given the root "phon", the students would have to write "sound." There will always be an extra credit question included as well.). The rest of the week, the students continued to work on their WIAN essay, and the rough draft was due today (Monday). This week, we will be working on title page, bibliography page, peer-editing, and a visual representation of their name using a fun online program. The final draft of the essay will be due this coming Monday. In grammar, the advanced class discussed simple & complete subjects & predicates and then the students did a worksheet.
Have a wonderful week!
