Happy Monday!
I don't know about you, but this weekend I got SO much sleep! (I may or may not have gone to bed at 8 p.m. last night... no shame, haha.) This fall weather just makes me want to sleep all the time. Fall is DEFINITELY my favorite time of year :) All the feels!
Okay, enough of my blabbering...
REMINDER TO ALL:
Book talks start a week from next Monday! The students should know when they are going (it has been posted outside my door for weeks), but if you are wanting their presentation dates, they can be found in one of my previous blog posts. I know I have some students who are still reading... if that is your child's case, PLEASE be encouraging them to use their free time to read at home! I don't want them to have to work on this the night before...
Box Top collection is also next week! Please be sending in your box tops (either cut out and glued on the provided sheets at the beginning of the year or cut out and put in a plastic baggie). Please also make sure that the expiration dates are accurate. Unfortunately, if the box top has expired, we cannot use it and have to throw it away. :( Box Tops are such an awesome way for our school to be able to do fun activities; therefore, please consider saving them for us this year!
Important Dates:
October 2nd - Student Council meeting @ 7:05 a.m.
October 8-11th - Box Top Collection
October 11th - Box Top clipping party (SC members only) in Mrs. Valdez' room after school
October 15th - Book talks start!
October 16th - Student Council meeting @ 7:05 a.m.
Last Week:
6th Grade ~ Last week, the 6th graders did a fun Monday Meditation on memes (the giggling in the classroom was crazy!!). I have been very pleased with the students' motivation to get their Monday Meds done BEFORE they are due. Keep up the great work! On Tuesday and Wednesday, the 6th graders finished up with their 2nd unit on reading strategies, and then we played a review game of Jeopardy on Thursday concluding this unit. Friday, we discussed the 6 Traits of Writing and what makes up a 5 paragraph essay as preparation for our next unit: the Patriot's Pen Essay! Each year, the 6th-8th graders participate in a VFW supported essay contest. This is a national contest that over 120,000 students participate in each year. For more information, please see this link: https://vfworg-cdn.azureedge.net/-/media/VFWSite/Files/Community/Youth-and-Education/Patriots-Pen-Student-Entry-Form-and-Brochure.pdf . PLEASE keep in mind that this contest is to be the students' writing, so while winning is exciting, parents can in no way help write this essay. It should be the student's work and their work only! In grammar, the 6th graders reviewed subject pronouns and possessive pronoun adjectives and did a worksheet.
7th Grade ~ Last week, the 7th graders worked more with The Giver. Throughout the week, the students accomplished chapters 9-12. They also did their second InfoPic on Seesaw, as well as completing a short quiz on chapters 6-12. On Tuesday, we had our very own Ceremony of 12, where the students were randomly given a particular job as if they were part of the community in the book (you can see pictures of your child and their job on Seesaw). They then completed 2 separate journal prompts about the job that they had. As Chief Elder (that's me!), I enjoy watching the kids participate in this activity; it allows them to truly connect to the book and realize the importance of the roles in the community that occur in The Giver. In Shurley Grammar, we reviewed subject pronouns and possessive pronoun adjectives and did a worksheet. In advanced grammar, we reviewed direct objects, and then worked with indirect objects through a short assignment.
8th Grade ~ Last week, the 8th graders worked with list 5 of Latin/Greek roots and then took a quiz on Friday. The rest of the week was spent working on their Patriot Pen Essays; self and peer editing. Today, we will finish up with the essays, formatting as a class, printing, and then handing them in! Yay! The kids are definitely glad to be done with their last Patriot's Pen Essay, haha. Please note that tomorrow we will be starting our next unit, the big Exceptionalities Research Paper. I will be sending an email home about that tomorrow with all the information, due dates, etc. So, be on the lookout! In advanced grammar, we reviewed direct objects, and then worked with indirect objects through a short assignment.
Have a great week! Don't float away from all the rain :P
