Last Week & This Week:

6th Grade ~ Last week, the 6th graders finished up with book talks! Next week, I will be talking about their 2nd Quarter project, which will be a book trailer (more info to come). On Monday, I also introduced the novel that we will be reading 2nd Quarter, Drums, Girls, & Dangerous Pie (DGDP). I discussed the reading strategies packet that they will be filling out for section 1 of the book as well as the journal prompts document. Throughout the week, the students and I read chapters 1-3 of DGDP. In grammar, the students reviewed interjections and then did a worksheet. This week, the students will complete their first set of comprehension questions for DGDP and read chapters 4-5 of the novel in small groups. The Section 1 Reading Strategies packet will be due NEXT Monday when we return from the long weekend. No grammar this week.

7th Grade ~ Last week, the 7th graders finished up with book talks! Next week, I will be talking about their 2nd Quarter project, which will be a book trailer (more info to come). The rest of the week was spent self/peer editing, formatting, filling out the entry form for, and printing the Patriot Pen Essays. We are officially done with the essays for this year! Woo! In Shurley grammar, the students reviewed interjections and then did a worksheet. In advanced grammar, the students learned about appositives and did a worksheet. This week, we will recap The Giver and I will explain the final project for the novel: creating a personal utopia, and the students will have time to start working on it. Those in advanced grammar will also be reviewing what we talked about in Unit 1 and then be taking their Unit 1 test TOMORROW! There will be no grammar for those in Shurley Grammar this week.

8th Grade ~ Last week, the 8th graders finished up with book talks! Next week, I will be talking about their 2nd Quarter project, which will be a book trailer (more info to come). The 8th graders also got list 8 of their Latin/Greek roots and took a quiz on Thursday. During the week, the students worked on their outlines for their research papers and actually started writing their rough drafts. We also discussed how to avoid plagiarism through the use of in-text citations. Their next due date will be after the long weekend (November 5th) in which their rough drafts will be due! In advanced grammar, the students learned about appositives and did a worksheet. This week, the students will continue to work on their rough drafts. We will also be reviewing unit 1 of grammar today through a study guide, and the unit 1 test will be TOMORROW!

Have a fabulous long weekend!

Grace
