Week 16

Happy Monday!

Thank you to all of those who purchased candy canes last week. The Student Council members had a blast using that money to purchase toys for Kapco's Toys for Tots. I believe we raised a little over $800 this year! Woo! Also, a big thank you to Mrs. Everts for helping the Student Council organize the sales again this year!

I also wanted to remind you all that your children will be attending The Nutcracker on Thursday. While I know that many of the students are not into ballet, this is a wonderful opportunity to see something that has been loved by those all over the world since 1892 (and something I hold VERY near and dear to my heart). Please make sure that your child is dressed up nicely on Thursday to see the performance as well as packing a bag lunch for the day.

Compassion donations should be going out to your students today. Please consider donating alone/with a small group/as a class. This is a great opportunity to provide a Christmas gift to those who are less fortunate than we are. We have all been so blessed; why not share those blessings with others?! Those donations will be due Friday, December 21st.

Lastly, I will be sending home Christmas book orders this week. This is probably the best book orders of the year because it has great Christmas deals for students, and is a great way to buy Christmas presents for your children! If you are interested in purchasing books, remember there are 2 ways to order: either fill out the paper order and make checks out to Scholastic Books or order online using my teacher code: PBKZC. Book orders will be due THIS Friday!

Important Dates:

  • December 13th - The Nutcracker performance

  • December 18th - Student Council meeting @ 7:05 a.m.

  • December 21st - Compassion donations due/Christmas parties/Bowling at Circle B

  • December 22nd-January 2nd - Christmas break

Last Week:

6th Grade ~ On Monday, the students worked on their Monday Mediation which was due today. If you are noticing that your child is not doing well on these assignments, it is probably because they are not fulfilling all of the requirements: 3-5 sentences, 2 paragraphs, answering the prompt, and not having any spelling/grammar/punctuation mistakes. On Monday, the students also took a quiz covering chapters 9-17 of DGDP. The rest of the week, the students and I continued reading DGDP, and actually finished the book on Thursday! To close up the novel, the students completed their last reading strategies packet and journal prompt, as well as answering a few questions about the ending of the novel. This week, the students will be working on their final project for the book (DGDP Final Project - rubric found in LA folder on Google Drive). I'm thinking this project will be due Friday, but we'll see how everything goes this week :) In grammar, the students worked with possessive noun adjectives and did a worksheet.

7th Grade ~ On Monday, the students worked on their Monday Mediation which was due today. If you are noticing that your child is not doing well on these assignments, it is probably because they are not fulfilling all of the requirements: 5-7 sentences, 2 paragraphs, answering the prompt, and not having any spelling/grammar/punctuation mistakes. Throughout the week, the students and I discussed a few different poetic elements, including alliteration, onomatopoeia, and imagery. They then did some accompanying activities to practice with those skills, including creating an alliteration advertisement for a made up company, creating a comic strip using onomatopoeia, and analyzing different poems with imagery with a partner. In Shurley grammar, the students took their chapter 7 test on helping verbs and natural vs. inverted word order. In advanced grammar, the students worked with adjective phrases and did a worksheet.

8th Grade ~ On Monday, the students got their Latin/Greek roots list and then took a quiz on Friday. We then spent the rest of the week starting to read TBT!! We made it through the Prologue and Part 1, and it has been SO cool seeing how excited the students are about reading this book (probably because I've been hyping them up about it since 6th grade, haha). The students also took a short quiz on what they read, and did very well! This week, the students will do a journal prompt and some discussion questions on what we've read so far, and then read Part 2. In grammar, the students worked with adverb phrases and did a worksheet.

Have a great week!

Grace
