Week 21

Good morning!

I hope you were able to enjoy the snow this weekend before it got horribly cold (would you believe it's even COLDER back home for me in MN! Yikes...). This morning I tried taking Daisy (my dog) outside and she couldn't walk in the snow because it was so cold. Had to carry her back to the house. Poor thing... But enough about Daisy...

Next week is National Lutheran Schools' Week! The dress up days have been listed in the Tuesday Note for a few weeks, and will be this week as well. Be sure to brush up on that information so your child is informed and READY to be festive!

Last week, I did introduce the students to their 3rd quarter reading project. Instead of a book talk or book trailer, they will be doing a more "hands on" project that requires a little more creativity. The rubric can be found in your child's LA folder on Google Drive. Last Week:

6th Grade ~ Last week, the 6th graders completed a fun Monday Meditation to celebrate my birthday (I cannot wait to read them!). The rest of the week, they continued to read and work with their Literature Circle groups. In their groups, they also completed some task cards as well as some jobs in their job packets. It is my hope to finish up the reading portion of literature circles within the next week so that the students can then start on their group project (more info to come next week!). In grammar, the students started Chapter 10, which is on both Pattern 1 and Pattern 2; they also did a worksheet to practice with those patterns.

7th Grade ~ Last week, the 7th graders completed a fun Monday Meditation to celebrate my birthday (I cannot wait to read them!). On Monday, we also played a review game on poetry and figurative language elements to prepare them for their test which was on Tuesday. I was SO pleased with the grades the students got on their tests! Probably the best scores I've ever had on these tests! I then started introducing them to our next unit, which will be reading the book The Outsiders. On Thursday and Friday, the 7th graders did some research on the 1960s (the time period of The Outsiders). We will spend today discussing that research, and then start reading later this week! Also, if you've seen on Seesaw, the students have been spending some time with the 1st graders, listening to them read out loud to practice their fluency. Mrs. Napoleon and I have found this to be a fantastic activity for both grades, and look forward to continuing with it the rest of the school year! (Classes will rotate every other week with 1st grade). In Shurley grammar, the students continued working with inverted vs. natural word order. NOTE: they will be taking a test on Chapter 8 THIS WEDNESDAY! In advanced grammar, we discussed infinitive phrases and did a worksheet.

8th Grade ~ Last week, the 8th graders got list 16 of their Latin/Greek roots and took a quiz on Friday. This week we will work with list 17. On Monday, I introduced a project to the students where they had to reach deeper inside themselves and talk about a time where they struggled with something. This project directly relates to one of the characters in TBT. Those projects were due Thursday and just from what I've seen, they look great! On Friday, my 7th hour went to help the Kindergartners with their 100 Day shirts (see Seesaw for pictures! They're adorable!). My 5th hour class will be helping Ms. Creech's class today with Ms. Shields. In grammar, the students worked with participial phrases and did a worksheet. The students collectively did not do very well on the worksheets, so we will do more practice with that lesson this week in grammar so as to improve some of those grades :)

ALL~ I just wanted to thank everyone to wished me happy birthday last week. It was truly one of the best birthdays I've ever had. The love the students showed me was truly amazing! :)

Have a great week!

Grace
