Happy Monday and the first day of April!!
Congrats to our ladies for getting 3RD PLACE at the National Basketball Tournament! We all were cheering on them from school and at home! It was fun sitting in Culvers this weekend watching the game on the phone while I enjoyed myself some cheese curds :) What an honor for the girls and surely a memory they will never forget!

Last Week:
6th Grade ~ Last week, the 6th grades worked on a Monday Meditation about super villains and their personal theme song :) On Monday, the students and I discussed the Gary Paulsen webquest they did the previous week, as well as brainstorming the most important items needed to survive in the wilderness. On Tuesday, we watched a brief overview of Hatchet, so the students who hadn't read the first book would understand what The River is about. I also explained how in this unit there will be a vocabulary emphasis/study and some vocabulary charts to fill out while we are reading; most vocabulary will be completed as a class thought. The rest of the week, the students and I read chapters 1-6 of The River. In grammar, the students started Chapter 13, which is on linking verbs, predicate nouns/pronouns, and Pattern 4.
7th Grade ~ Last week, the 7th graders finished watching The Outsiders movie. On Monday, we started talking about our speech unit, and brainstorming what qualities make up a good public speaker. We then spent the next 2 days watching examples of good/bad speeches and picking out the qualities in each. On Friday, the students took a quiz on the speech concepts we talked about throughout the week. In Shurley grammar, the students took a test on pattern 1 vs. pattern 2. In advanced grammar, the students and I talked about singular vs. plural possessive nouns and did a worksheet.
8th Grade ~ Last week, the 8th graders worked with list 23 of their Latin/Greek roots, and took a quiz on Friday. On Monday, we talked about irony and the 3 different types found in life/literature as well as Edgar Allan Poe's short story, "The Tell-Tale Heart". On Tuesday, we read "The Tell-Tale-Heart" and discussed its meaning. On Thursday, the students watched an animated version of the text and compared/contrasted the text vs. film. I also explained the TTH trial that we will be having this week. Tomorrow, the students and I are going to simulate a mock trial of the story; one side will defend the narrator saying he is clinically insane, the other side will prosecute the narrator saying he is guilty of 1st degree murder. Some students will be part of the jury, be detectives, and other characters from the story. I am very excited to act as The Honorable Ms. Bertram and cannot wait to see how the trial turns out. :) In grammar, the students and I talked about singular vs. plural possessive nouns and did a worksheet.
Have a great week! Happy April!
