Week 19

Good morning!

I hope you all were safe and warm over the weekend with the snow, as well as find time to enjoy it with your kids :) I'm not going to lie in saying that I was excited for the snow. It's about time we had a GOOD amount of snow to look at. If it's going to be this cold, it might as well snow too... :P

I just wanted to send out a formal congratulations to Ameilya Hackbarth-Weber (8th Grade). Last Wednesday she participated in the district spelling bee at Sheboygan Lutheran High School and got 5th place out of 31 participants! This was very exciting! Also, congratulations to all of those who participated! We as a staff and school are SO proud of you!

Also, just a reminder to be sending in your donated items for soldiers; you should have received an email saying what each class is to provide. We will be packing those care packages next week during National Lutheran Schools Week.

Important Dates:

  • January 26-31st - National Lutheran School Week

  • February 4th - Student Council meeting @ 7:05 a.m.

  • February 10-13th - Box Top Collection

  • February 13th - Box Top Clipping Party for SC members after school

Last Week:

6th Grade ~ Last week, the 6th graders worked on a Monday Meditation about their favorite birthday, which was due today. On Monday, I explained the next unit the students would be working on, which is a decade project. Each student has been assigned a decade between the 1930s-1990s with a partner/small group. During the week, the students researched their decade to become familiar with it. Then on Friday, they started reading a novel that takes place in their decade. In grammar, the students continued to work with PNAs and did a worksheet. NOTE: they will be taking their Chapter 8 Test this Wednesday.

7th Grade ~ Last week, the 7th graders worked on a Monday Meditation about their favorite birthday, which was due today. On Monday and Tuesday, the students did their impromptu speeches and actually did REALLY well! It is always a little nerve-wrecking to get up in front of your classmates and talk about something that you don't know, but the students relaxed and did amazing! On Wednesday, I taught the 7th graders about informative speeches, and then on Thursday, the students picked their topics. On Friday, they started researching their topics. Research will be due THIS Tuesday, and we will begin presenting those speeches starting NEXT Monday. In Shurley grammar, the students continued to work with PPAs and did a worksheet. In advanced grammar, the students learned about infinitives and did a worksheet.

8th Grade ~ Last week, the 8th graders worked with list #14 of Latin/Greek roots and took a quiz on Friday. On Monday, the students and I started reading Part 4 of TBT. Tuesday, the students read in small groups, and then on Wednesday, we finished Part 4 together. On Thursday, I introduced the 8th graders to their first Socratic Discussion, which is where the students are given a set of high-level questions about TBT and then they have to discuss them in a small group. This is a skill that the students will continue to use throughout the rest of their schooling, as it promotes and practices high-order thinking and independence in comprehension. For their first Socratic Discussion, the 8th graders did VERY well; I was very impressed! On Thursday, the students also did a Seesaw journal prompt. On Friday, I explained a short individual project based on Part 4 of TBT. For this project, the students will be telling a story about something they fear/a moment that has changed their life (it will NOT be shared with the class as some stories may be personal). In grammar, the students continued to work with contractions and did a worksheet.

Have a great day! Stay warm!

Grace
