Week 5

Happy first day of FALL!

I hope those that attended the Wine and Harvest Festival in Cedarburg were able to find some time to enjoy it, despite the yucky weather. I always love the festival and all the fun things there are to do... and eat :) This fall has had quite an interesting start. I hope it starts to feel more like fall in the days to come!

Just a reminder that we are a little less than 3 weeks away from the start of book talk presentations (October 14th-22nd). I will be reminding the students these next weeks to be working on finishing their books and starting their book talks. Rubrics for book talks can be found in your child's LA folder in Drive.

Also, if your child wanted to order book orders, those are due to me by THIS Friday.

With that being said...

Important Dates:

  • September 25th - School Pictures

  • September 27th - Mid-quarter/book orders due

  • October 1st - Student Council meeting @ 7:05 a.m.

Last Week:

6th Grade ~ Last week, the 6th graders had a Monday Meditation that was due today. I continue to be amazed by their writing skills and creativity! On Monday and Tuesday, the students had time to work on their first written "test", which was simply a 2 paragraph explanation of a prompt about what we have been studying so far this year. Most students did very well and followed directions; I was very impressed :) We then started our second unit on Wednesday, which discussed making predictions, asking questions, and drawing conclusions. The students practiced with those skills Thursday and Friday. In grammar, we continued to review prepositional phrases. NOTE: the 6th graders will be taking their first grammar test THIS Wednesday.

7th Grade ~ Last week, the 7th graders had a Monday Mediation that was due today. It has been fun watching how their writing has changed over the last year :) Throughout the rest of the week, we continued to read our novel, Among the Hidden, as well as completing accompanying activities such as: discussing character's traits, doing comprehension questions, journal prompts, and all class reviews. In Shurley grammar, the students practiced with prepositional phrases and did a worksheet. In advanced grammar, the students learned about direct objects and did a worksheet.

8th Grade ~ Last week, the 8th graders took their 4th Latin/Greek roots quiz; I can't believe we're already this far in the school year! On Monday and Tuesday, the students finished proofreading their WIAN essays and made final touches on the final drafts. Final drafts were due Wednesday; I've started grading them and they are FABULOUS so far! I can't wait to keep reading! On Wednesday, we started talking about our second essay of the year, the Patriot's Pen essay. This year's theme is "What Makes America Great." We brainstormed with that topic during class, filled out a graphic organizer, and then worked on the outline portion of the essay Thursday and Friday. In grammar, the students learned about action vs. linking verbs and did a worksheet.

Have a great week!

Grace
