Weeks 15/16/17

Happy Monday!

Well, it's going to be a CRAZY next few weeks, so know that this blog is going to cover LAST week, THIS week, AND the short 2 days for when we get back from Christmas break... hopefully it won't be too overwhelming for you to read :)

There is SO much going on/coming up so I wanted to highlight a few of the important ones:

  • Christmas Programs: TOMORROW night, will be our 2 Christmas programs. Remember that if you are A-Ki you will be at the 5 p.m. service. If you are Kj-Z you will be at the 7 p.m. service. An email was sent out last week about parking and call times for individual students in the program, as well as required clothing for particular roles. The students have been practicing SO hard the last few weeks, I cannot wait to see them tell the story our our Christ's birth!

  • Yearbook Photo: THURSDAY morning, the whole school will be taking the yearbook photo. Please make sure your child is wearing a BLACK shirt to school that day.

  • Christmas Parties: FRIDAY is the annual day of craziness with bowling at Circle B and Christmas parties. Your child IS allowed to bring money to the bowling alley to buy very unhealthy, yet delicious snacks, but the money cannot go towards any of the games in the game room. When we get back from Circle B, we will head straight to lunch (most students are NOT hungry, but we give them the option), and then Christmas parties are to follow. Note: if you child is participating in a gift exchange for their homeroom, make sure gifts are also brought to school this day. I look forward to partaking in the sugar highs and fun activities :)

  • Compassion Donations Due: FRIDAY donations for Compassion International will be due to Mrs. Valdez or me. I have heard some students discussing groups to work with (which is SO awesome)! Please consider talking to your child about donating; this is such a great opportunity, especially because we have been so blessed here in Ozaukee County.

  • Book Trailers: Immediately, when the students get back from break on the 2nd, we will begin presenting book trailers. I have been checking in with the students and many of them are right on their way to finishing early! Rubrics are in the student's LA folder in Drive and they are encouraged to ask as many questions as possible BEFORE break. Those that will begin presenting that Thursday are: Zeke, Tyler H, Amy, Olivia, Nathan, Lily E, Sarah H, Gabi, Trista, Ameilya, Jasmin, and Jenny.

Important Dates:

  • December 17: Student Council meeting @ 7:05 a.m./Christmas Programs @ 5 & 7 p.m.

  • December 19th: Yearbook photo

  • December 20th: Circle B for bowling/Christmas parties/Compassion donations due

  • January 2nd: Book trailers begin

What's Going On Lately:

6th Grade ~ Last week, the 6th graders worked on a Monday Meditation about wrapping gifts; it was due today. On Monday, I explained the LAST Reading Strategies packet for DGDP (which will be due tomorrow). Throughout the week, the students and I read chapters 16-19 of DGDP, as well as completing some accompanying activities: a short quiz and some journal prompts. On Thursday, I introduced close reading to the 6th graders, which is looking more deeply into a text and answering some questions about it; we will continue with close reading throughout the year. In grammar, the students discussed possessive noun adjectives (PNAs) and did a worksheet. THIS WEEK: Today, the students had to write a Christmas poem for their Monday Meditation; it will be due when we get back from break. Today, we also finished reading DGDP! On Tuesday, we will be evaluating the ending of the book. Wednesday and Thursday we will play some fun ELA Christmas-themed games. AFTER BREAK: Book trailers will begin after we get back on Thursday. I will then explain the final project for DGDP. That Friday, I will be giving the preliminary spelling bee to see who advances to our school-wide spelling bee in January.

7th Grade ~ Last week, the 7th graders worked on a Monday Meditation about wrapping gifts; it was due today. On Monday and Tuesday, the students worked on analyzing different poems, incorporating all the elements of figurative language we've discussed in this unit. On Wednesday and Thursday, the students picked one of their favorite songs and analyzed it, looking for different elements of figurative language. On Friday, the students filled out the study guide for their upcoming test on figurative language. In Shurley grammar, the students reviewed interjections and did a worksheet. In advanced grammar, the students learned about adverbial clauses and did a worksheet. THIS WEEK: Today, the students had to write a Christmas poem for their Monday Meditation; it will be due when we get back from break. Today and tomorrow, the 7th graders will play Jeopardy as a way to review for their test. On Wednesday, the students will take their figurative language test. Thursday, we will play a Christmas-themed ELA game. AFTER BREAK: Book trailers will begin after we get back on Thursday. We will then begin our next unit: public speaking! That Friday, I will be giving the preliminary spelling bee to see who advances to our school-wide spelling bee in January.

8th Grade ~ Last week, the 8th graders worked with list 12 of Latin/Greek roots and took their quiz on Friday. Throughout the week, the students and I read chapters 5-11 of TBT, as well as completing some accompanying activities: a journal prompt on point of view and some comprehension questions. In grammar, the 8th graders took their Unit 4 Grammar Test and did SO well! Grades have already been posted in Renweb as well as on Seesaw. THIS WEEK: This week there will be NO Latin/Greek roots due to Christmas parties and other events. Throughout the week, the 8th graders and I will read Part 2 of TBT, and do a letter-writing activity which will be due Friday (so no homework over break!). AFTER BREAK: Book trailers will begin after we get back on Thursday. We will then begin reading Part 3 of TBT. Friday, I will be giving the preliminary spelling bee to see who advances to our school-wide spelling bee in January.

Have a WONDERFUL Christmas and a HAPPY New Year! 2020 here we come!

Grace
