Happy Monday!
It's going to be a beautiful fall day today! So, make sure you get outside to enjoy the weather before it gets cold this weekend... I hear rumor of white fluffy stuff... :(
Just so you know, I am combining last week and this week's blog together because it is a shorter week and I will be gone on Thursday for the tri-annual Lutheran Educator's Association (LEA) conference. Therefore, do not look for a blog NEXT Monday because it's included here :)
Book talks start on MONDAY! To find the date of your child's presentation, it will be listed on the first week's blog-post. I will be doing a final check-in with the students this week. If you could be checking in with them as well, that would be very helpful! This project is worth 100 points and a big portion of each student's grade... I want them to do well!
Finally, this week is our first Box Top collection! Please be sending in your box tops with your child to be turned into your child's homeroom teacher, and put towards their classes total count. Winning class in the middle school receives a movie party!
Important Dates:
October 7-10th - Box Top Collection
October 10th - Box Top clipping party for SC members in Mrs. Valdez room until 4 p.m.
October 11th - No school!
October 14-22nd - Book Talk presentations
Last Week AND This Week:
6th Grade ~ Last week, the 6th graders worked on a Monday Meditation about creating a new viral clothing trend; they were due today. On Tuesday, we discussed the 6 traits of writing as well as what makes up a 5 paragraph essay. On Wednesday, the students took a short quiz on what we discussed and they did pretty well! The rest of the week was spent brainstorming topics for the Patriot's Pen Essay contest hosted by the VFW. These essays will be submitted to the local VFW post at the end of October. This year's topic is: "What Makes America Great." In grammar, the students worked with pronouns and did a worksheet. THIS WEEK, the students have a Monday Meditation which will be due NEXT Monday. Today and tomorrow, the 6th graders will be working on their Patriot's Pen Essay outlines, and then spend Wednesday and Thursday beginning to write their rough drafts. In grammar, we will continue to work with pronouns and do a worksheet.
7th Grade ~ Last week, the 7th graders worked on a Monday Meditation about creating a new viral clothing trend; they were due today. Throughout the week, the 7th graders read Among the Hidden chapters 17-20 and did 2 journal prompts. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the students did some activities with their "Shadow Child Identities", including pretending to blog with their fellow classmates/shadow children. In Shurley Grammar, the students took their Chapter 3 Grammar Test and did very well! In advanced grammar, we worked with predicate nouns/adjectives and did a worksheet. THIS WEEK, the students have a Monday Meditation which will be due NEXT Monday. The 7th graders will read chapters 21-26 of Among the Hidden, and do some other activities, including some comprehension questions, a comprehensive quiz, and a 2nd blog-post. In Shurley Grammar, we will work with pronouns and do a worksheet. In advanced grammar, we will work with prepositional phrases and do a worksheet.
8th Grade ~ Last week, the 8th graders worked with list #6 of Latin/Greek roots and took a quiz on Friday. On Monday, the students formatted their Patriot's Pen essays and then turned them in - they're very excited this is their last one! On Tuesday, I introduced the Exceptionalities Research Paper to the students and we went over all the requirements. The students also selected paper topics. Thank you for reading the packet with your child and signing that sheet. Also, thank you to those who found time to head to the library for resources/emailed me if issues arose. I appreciate all of the support in this research project! On Wednesday and Thursday, the students and I discussed how to write a research paper and use notecards, and then on Friday the students actually started researching! In grammar, we discussed active vs. passive voice and did a worksheet. THIS WEEK, the 8th graders will NOT have Latin/Greek roots or a quiz (I'm sure they'll be SO happy about that, haha). Monday through Thursday will be dedicated to researching. The next due date will be NEXT MONDAY, in which 25 notecards are due. In grammar, we will work with the simple tense and do a worksheet.
Phew! That was a lot of information! Have a GREAT week and a fabulous long weekend :)
