Happy Red Ribbon Week!
There's nothing like the first dress up week of the school year :) It's fun to see the students all excited about crazy days and fun activities... not to mention PJ day on Thursday (definitely MY favorite dress up day!). It should be a fun week and I am grateful to all those who helped plan and prepare for it.
This week, the students will be finishing up book talks (6th grade specifically). I was SO impressed with how the first book talks went and the definite effort that each student put into their project. I don't think I've ever had this many As in the first quarter! Just a heads up that within the next few weeks I will be discussing 2nd quarter's book trailers with the students. However, until then, the students can relax and finish up their student-led conferences presentations.
And speaking of conferences... the students have been working SO hard on their presentations for student-led conferences. If you have not signed up with your child's teacher for conferences yet, please make sure you do that. If you cannot make any of the times available, the teachers can find a time that works for you. We want to make sure that all of the hard work the students have been putting forth can be presented to you :)
It IS the last week of 1st Quarter, so next week report cards will be coming out!
FINALLY... because of next week's craziness with conferences, I will be combining last week and this week's blog.

Last Week:
6th Grade ~ Last week, the 6th graders began presenting their book talks. On Monday, the students had their last work day on their Patriot's Pen Essay rough drafts. The rest of the week was spent self/peer editing, making corrections, and printing off the final draft. I cannot wait to see how well our school does in the contest! In grammar, the 6th graders began working with conjunctions and did a worksheet. THIS WEEK, the students will finish up with book talks. We will then begin a preparation activity for our next unit (reading our first novel Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie), by doing a webquest/group project on different types of drums. Each group will be assigned a different drum and be responsible for researching information about it and displaying it on a colorful poster. They will then present those posters to the class on Thursday. In grammar, we will continue working with conjunctions and do a worksheet.
7th Grade ~ Last week, the 7th graders presented their book talks; grades for those can be found in RenWeb as well as Seesaw. On Monday and Tuesday, the students and I finished reading Among the Hidden, as well as completing the last journal prompt for the novel. Thursday and Friday, I introduced this year's Patriot's Pen Essay Contest topic to the students, "What Makes America Great," and the students and I brainstormed what they could write about, as well as getting started on outlines. Please note that after we finish with the essays, we will go back to ATH and do a fun final project... I just have to get PP essays done by October 31st! In grammar, the students worked with adjectival and adverbial prepositional phrases and did a worksheet. THIS WEEK, the 7th graders will finish their essay outlines and write their rough drafts. On Friday, we will start self/peer editing. In grammar, the students will learn about appositives and do a worksheet.
8th Grade ~ Last week, the 8th graders presented their book talks; grades for those can be found in RenWeb as well as Seesaw. On Monday, 25 notecards towards their research project were due. Tuesday, I gave the students one last day to research for their papers, and then we began organizing information and working on outlines Thursday and Friday. In grammar, the 8th graders learned about Perfect Tenses and did a worksheet. THIS WEEK, the students will have today to finish up their paper outlines, and then they are DUE Tuesday. Tomorrow, I will teach the 8th graders about in-text citations and review plagiarism and then, crazy enough, the students will start working on their rough drafts the rest of the week (I can't believe we're at this part of the paper already!). In grammar, the students will continue to learn about tenses and do a worksheet.
It's going to be a busy next few weeks! I look forward to seeing some of you at conferences next week! Have a great day, and God's blessings!
Grace
